In partnership with the Center for the Preservation of Civil Rights Sites, the Alabama African American Civil Rights Heritage Sites Consortium, and Tuskegee University, SDS prepared a comprehensive assessment for the sustainable management of Black heritage sites associated with civil rights histories. The assessment evaluated the physical conditions of buildings, infrastructure, and landscapes and documented any signs of deterioration, wear, or potential threats. Simultaneously, a quick assessment model that could easily be replicated was developed. This model serves as a valuable tool that can be adopted by other heritage sites and organizations facing similar challenges. By streamlining the assessment process, the quick-assessment model enables efficient identification and prioritization of needs for sustainable site management. Its replicability ensures that this successful approach can be shared and applied widely, contributing to preserving and effectively managing heritage sites beyond the immediate scope of the Alabama Civil Rights Project.
